Gene Bicknell Sports Complex
The Gene Bicknell Sports Complex is the home of both the Pittsburg State Baseball and Softball programs. It includes Al Ortolani Field, home of the baseball team, the PSU Softball field, coaches offices, an indoor hitting facility and two intramural fields.
The baseball facility is named in honor of longtime PSU athletic trainer Al Ortolani, who was the Gorillas first baseball coach (1962-72). Ortolani guided PSU to a 95-90 overall record, including a pair of Central Intercollegiate Conference titles and a trip to the NAIA District III playoffs.
Ortolani Field continues to draw reviews as one of the top playing facilities in the midwest. Pittsburg State moved into the oncampus facility on April 1, 1995. The Gorillas had played at the city-owned and shared Jaycee Ball Park from 1962-72 and again from 1991-95.
After dropping a twinbill to Lincoln University on the inaugural day at Ortolani Field on April 1, 1995, the Gorillas won their remaining eight games at the facility in ’95. In 1996, PSU posted an 18-12 record in its first full season at Al Ortolani Field. The Gorillas were 22-7 at their home park in 1997, 25-7 in 1998, 23-3 in 1999 and 20-9 in 2000. PSU also has posted 18 or more wins in 2002 (26-9), 2003 (25-8), 2004 (24-14), 2005 (21-9), 2007 (18-21) and 2013 (18-10). The Gorillas all-time record at the facility stands at 375-237 (.613) entering the 2017 season.
Al Ortolani Field received a major boost prior to the 2003 season with the installation of lights to the facility.
The Pittsburg State softball program has played 18 seasons at the PSU Softball Field. The field opened for the team's regular season home finale against Southwest Baptist on April 22, 1998. The team won their inaugural game, 2-1, before losing the second game of the doubleheader.Â
In 12 of those 18 seasons, the Gorillas have posted winning home records, including each of the last five. The program has a 217-158-1 record at the PSU Softball Field. The 100th win in the facility came in a 5-0 win over Northern State on March 9, 2006. The 200th win was a 1-0 win over Northeastern State on April 25, 2015. Â
A new indoor hitting facility directly behind both the softball and baseball fields was completed in 2013. The building features a pulley system of nets that can form up to five batting cages and/or pitching areas for the baseball and softball teams.Â
The baseball and softball coaches' offices and storage areas for both sports are located in the house at the front of the complex.
