PITTSBURG, Kan. -- The Pitt State volleyball team completed the Homecoming sweep of Emporia State on Saturday afternoon, as they won 3-2 (19-25, 26-24, 19-25, 25-23, 15-9) after the football team's 45-17 win over the Hornets earlier in the day.
The Gorillas dropped the first and the third set, but won two and four and dominated the fifth set to win the match.Â
Ary Crittleton had a career game for the Gorillas, putting down 20 kills with only three errors for a .362 hitting percentage. She also had three digs. Madi Mosier added 14 kills and 10 dis for a double-double. She also had four blocks. Paula Okrutna also hit in double figures with 12 kills. She shared the team lead in blocks with Ashley Bell with six a piece. Okrutna had two solo blocks and four assisted, while Bell had six block assists. Hayley Hansford served up 50 assists and recorded 12 digs for a double-double. Ashlen Schwartz led all players with 27 digs.Â
The Gorillas put down 13 blocks as a team, while Emporia State had 10.0. The Gorillas hit at a slightly higher percentage, but Emporia State had five more kills. The Hornets also had three more aces than the Gorillas, but also had three more service errors.
There were 10 ties and five lead changes in the first half, the last being at 18-18. Emporia State rattled off four straight points before the Gorillas got to 19, but that would be the last Pitt State point as Emporia State won the set 25-19.
In set two, the Gorillas trailed by as many as seven, 14-7, before they began fighting their way back into the match. The team outscored the Hornets 12-5 to tie the set at 19-all on an Okrutna kill. Crittleton added another kill to give Pitt State its first lead of the set. The teams would tie again at 20, 22, 23 and 25 before the Gorillas could use a kill by Bell and a big block by Bell and Highberger to seal the win.
Set three was close early, but Emporia State took its first four-point lead at 14-10 and held on there for the rest of the set to win 25-19.
The fourth set featured another come back by the home team. Down 15-10, Pitt State used a Crittleton kill and three straight errors by the Hornets to bring the set within one. A Bell kill later tied the set at 16-all. Pitt State stayed close but was not able to take over the lead until an attack error by the Hornets gave the Gorillas the 24-23 lead. Bell put down a kill for the 25-23 win.
Set five was all Gorillas as the team pushed to eight and led 8-3 at the switch. The Hornets scored three points quickly, but the Gorillas fought back to go up 14-6. The Hornets again attempted a comeback, scoring three more points before Crittleton put down her 20th kill of the night for match point.
Pitt State will host three home matches next week, Tuesday at 7 p.m. against Central Oklahoma, Friday at 7 p.m. against Lindenwood and Saturday at 3 p.m. against Central Missouri.
