Hot Second Half Shooting Leads to 87-68 Win for Gorilla Women

PITTSBURG, Kan. -- The No. 10 Pittsburg State women's basketball team (22-3, 13-2 MIAA) hit nearly 71 percent of its second half shots to earn a commanding 87-68 win over Nebraska-Kearney (11-13, 5-10 MIAA) on Thursday (Feb. 12) in John Lance Arena.

After shooting only 34.4 percent (11-for-32) in the first half, the Gorillas missed only seven shots (17-of-24) in the second half and went on a 17-0 run mid-second half to lead the Lopers by 32, 72-40, with 8:45 to go in the game.

Pitt State outrebounded the Lopers by 10, 36-26, including 11 rebounds off the offensive glass to produce 14 second chance points.

The Gorillas depth was also a factor in the game, as their bench outscored the Lopers bench, 36-11.

Lizzy Jeronimus led all scorers with 19 points. Antqunita Reed was the only other Pitt State starter in double figures with 10. Three more Gorilla players came off the bench to score in double figures, led by Morgan Westhoff, who was 4-for-5 from three-point range. Mikaela Burgess added 11 points and Cathy Brugman, 10. Jeronimus and Kylie Gafford each pulled down six rebounds. Brigit Hesser, Paige Lungwitz and Burgess each dished out three assists.

The Gorillas continue their four game home stand on Saturday (Feb. 14) at 1:30 p.m. against No. 2 Fort Hays State.
