TOPEKA -- A white hot Pitt State team cruised to an 88-57 win over Washburn on Wednesday night at Lee Arena. The Gorillas set a new school record for threes made in a game with 21. The previous record was 14, last achieved on January 21, 2012 against Missouri Western.
Six different players hit threes in the game to drive the team to the record. The Gorillas shot 68 percent from three and 50 percent overall.
Mikaela Burgess led the Gorillas with 32 points, including 9-of-13 from three-point range. She is the first player to score 30 points or more since Lizzy Jeronimus scored 35 against Emporia State in 2012. She is only the second player in school history to hit nine or more threes in a game. Jenni Miller made nine in a game once, and set the school record with 11 on January 28, 1995 against Truman.
Cathy Brugman and Shelby Lopez each finished with 12 points.
Pitt State started the first quarter hot. The team hit 9-of-10 shots from three, including three from Burgess and two each from Lungwitz and Herlocker. The sharp shooting Gorillas held a strong 29-14 lead at the end of the first quarter.
The Gorillas shooting cooled only slightly in the second quarter. Burgess and Lungwitz each hit another three and the team led 42-27 at the half.
An 8-3 run by the Ichabods to start the second half allowed the home team to cut the Gorilla lead to single digits, but back-to-back threes by Burgess boosted the lead again. Brugman, Flott and Burgess each added another three in the third quarter to give Pitt State the 63-45 lead.
The fourth quarter was more of the same, as five more threes found their home, including three by Lopez.
Pitt State travels to Emporia on Saturday to take on the Lady Hornets at 3:30 p.m. Please note the start of the game is earlier than was previously published.
