BOLIVAR, Mo. -- The Pitt State softball team improved to 28-9 on the season with two one-run victories, 1-0 and 4-3, over Southwest Baptist on the road on Tuesday (March 29).
In game one, Pitt State scored one run on seven hits and a Bearcat error, while SBU was held to no runs on five hits and one Pitt State error. Game two saw the Gorillas capitalize on four Bearcat miscues and seven hits to plate four runs, while Southwest Baptist plated three runs on five hits and two Gorilla errors.
In the first game, SBU was not able to get a runner beyond second base. Pitt State had an opportunity to score in the thrid, but two were thrown out at the plate.
Finally in the sixth inning, the Gorillas got on the board. Katy Remy started the inning with a base hit to left center. She moved to second on a Nicole Nease ground out and scored on a Kylie Guthier base hit.
Emmie Robertson earned the win in the circle to improve to 16-4 on the year. She fanned 10 Bearcat batters.
In game two, SBU scored first as they used small ball to push their leadoff batter home in the bottom of the first.
Pitt State immediately answered in its half of the second, as the Gorillas took advantage of three errors to plate three runs with two outs in the inning. With one out, Jenna Bolton reached on an error. Following the second out, Catie Cummins and Jordan Bradshaw hit back-to-back base hits to right with Bradshaw's hit bringing Bolton home. Ashton Pratt reached on an error to load the bases. The third error of the inning, this one on Sierra Hall's at bat brought home Cummins and Bradshaw for a 3-1 lead.
The Gorillas did not have time to get comfortable with their lead though, as SBU came right back with two runs on three hits, a hit batter and a walk in the bottom of the second.
Pitt State got close to scoring in the fourth, as did Southwest Baptist in the fifth. It was the Gorillas who finally got in the winning run in the top of the sixth. Bradshaw started the offense with a one-out base hit to right. She moved to second on a Hall base hit ans scored the game winning run on a Remy base hit.
Morgan Myers pitched five innings in the win for the Gorillas to improve her record to 10-4 on the year. She struck out three and waked three. Robertson pitched the final two innings to earn her first save of the season. She did not give up a hit and struck out one.
Pitt State returns home for weekend games against Lindenwood and Lincoln. The Gorillas will take on Lindenwood in the annual Melanoma Awareness game beginning at 2 p.m. on Saturday. The team will celebrate its five seniors, Alex Perez, Jordan Bradshaw, Zoe Price, Ashton Pratt and Catie Cummins, on Senior Day on Sunday, April 3 at 1 p.m. against Lincoln.
