Gorilla Women Hit Century Mark in Win Over Lincoln

PITTSBURG -- The Pitt State women's basketball team (15-1, 7-0 MIAA) earned a 106-67 victory over Lincoln (2-12, 1-6 MIAA) on Thursday (Jan. 12). 106 points are the most scored by the Gorillas this season. 

Five Pitt State players scored in double figures, led by Madison Northcutt with 18. Shelby Lopez added 16, as she led the Gorillas from long-range, hitting 4-of-7 from three. Paige Lungwitz contributed 15. Athena Alvarado came off the bench to score 14. She was a perfect 6-for-6 from the floor and 2-for-2 from the charity stripe. Mikaela Burgess was the final player scoring in double figures with 13. Hadyn Herlocker was just short of an unconventional double-double as she led the team with 10 rebounds and nine assists. Meghan Maher scored nine points as she hit three threes. In all 13 players saw court time for the Gorillas with 10 of them scoring. 

Pitt State started the game slow and the lead changed three times before an 11-0 Gorilla run gave the home team the lead for good. 

The Gorillas earned their first double digit lead on a Maher three with 8:01 to go in the first half. That lead was stretch to 19 points, 50-31, by halftime. 

The lead hovered around 19 for the first five minute of the second half, but after a Khadijah Ellison jumper with 4:42 to go in the third quarter, the Gorillas did not allow the Blue Tigers to score until the 9:08 mark in the fourth quarter. In the meantime, Pitt State went on a 21-0 run to take their largest lead of the game, 88-48. Pitt State hit the century mark on the first of two Brenlee McPherson free throws with five minutes left in the game. 

The Gorillas will take the court against Lindenwood on Saturday (Jan. 14) at 1:30 p.m. in John Lance Arena.
