Softball Wins Two on Opening Day

DURANT, Okla. -- The Pittsburg State softball team opened the season with a 10-1 win over Southwestern Oklahoma in six innings. It followed that with a 7-5 win over Cameron. Both games were part of the Southeastern Oklahoma Regional Tournament at the Durant Multi-Sports Complex.

In the season opener against Southwestern Oklahoma, eight of the nine Pitt State starters got hits. Senior Kylie Guthier led the way with a 2-for-4 performance with two home runs, including the walk-off grand slam to end the game in the bottom of the sixth. Guthier recorded seven RBI in the game, tying for second-most single game RBI in school history. Junior Katy Remy was 1-3 in the game, but scored two runs, as she also drew a walk.

Junior pitcher Emmie Robertson gave up two hits in the first inning, but did not allow a base runner after that. She struck out 11.

Southwestern Oklahoma got on the board first on a lead off bunt and an RBI double in the top of the first.

Pitt State did not respond until the home half of the third. Remy reached on a fielding error to lead off. Senior Nicole Nease added a base hit. Remy was able to move all the way to third as the ball rolled until the glove of the SWOSU right fielder. Guthier stepped up to the plate and hit her first home run of the season to bring home three runs.

The final seven runs were all scored in the bottom of the sixth. Freshman Kala Holder led off with a base hit. Junior Lawren McKinney followed with another base hit. Sophomore Kristen Van Hoosen reached on a fielder's choice that put Holder out at third. Sophomore Sierra Hall dropped a bunt single that loaded the bases. Freshman Kaity Kukowski stood in and took a pitch to earn an RBI and put the Gorillas up 4-1. Remy added a bases loaded base hit through the left side. Nease drew a bases loaded walk to make the lead 6-1 and keep the bases loaded for Guthier. After a pitching change, Guthier hit the grand slam to end the game.

Game two was a more difficult match up for the Gorillas. Pitt State scored its seven runs on 16 hits. The Aggies were a bit more efficient, scoring their five runs on eight hits and one Pitt State error.

This time all nine Gorilla batters got hits. Remy, Holder and senior Tiara Ewy each went 3-for-4. Remy added a run and an RBI. Holder had a triple, two runs and an RBI. Ewy added two RBI and a run.

Once again, the opponent scored first, with Cameron putting up one run in the top of the first.

This time it didn't take as long for the Gorillas to answer as they scored three runs in the bottom of the second. Holder led off the inning with a base hit. McKinney hit a double to bring her home and tie the game 1-1. Ewy added a base hit that pushed McKinney to third and McKinney came around to score on the throw to second. With one out, Kukowski added a base hit to score Ewy.

The Aggies used a single, a triple and a double to plate two runs in the top of the third and tie the game 3-3.

Pitt State broke the tie in the bottom of the fourth on three base hits and a passed ball. After the Gorillas scored, Cameron made a pitching change and were able to work out of a bases loaded situation without giving up another run.

With the lead, Pitt State brought in Robertson to replace starter Bree Cornett in the circle. Cameron used their defensive momentum to plate another run and tie the game again in the top of the fifth.

Remy started the Gorillas with a base hit in the bottom of the sixth. Nease dropped a sacrifice bunt to move the runner into scoring position. Guthier singled down the left field line to score Remy. Sierra Hall came in to pinch run for Guthier. Holder legged out a triple to left to score Hall and give Pitt State a two-run cushion. The final run came as Ewy knocked in Holder.

A Pitt State error allowed Cameron to score one run in the top of the seventh, but they got no futher, giving the Gorillas the 7-5 win.

Cornett pitched 4.0 innings in her first appearance as a Gorilla. She gave up three runs on seven hits. She struck out one batter and did not walk any. Roberston pitched the final 3.0 innings to earn the win. She allowed one hit, walked four and struck out two.

Pitt State will continue tournament play on Saturday (Feb. 4) with a 9:30 a.m. game against Southern Nazarene and a 2:30 p.m. game against East Central. Both games can be view live here.
