DURANT, Okla. --Â The Pitt State softball team split games in the final day of the Southeastern Oklahoma Regional Challenge. The team lost to Rockhurst, 1-0, before coming back to earn a 4-3 win over the tournament host. The Gorillas finish opening weekend with a 5-1 record.
Pitt State scored each of its four runs in the win over Southeastern Oklahoma in the top of the first inning. Kaity Kukowski drew a leadoff walk to open the game. Shelby Miller got the first hit of the game with a bunt single. Katy Remy drew another walk to load the bases. Nicole Nease knocked a base hit up the middle to bring home both Kukowski and Miller. Kylie Guthier reached on a fielder's choice that put Katy Remy out at third. Kala Holder also reached on a fielder's choice, but a Southeastern Oklahoma error left all runners safe and the bases loaded once again. Lawren McKinney hit an RBI base hit to left to score Nease and give the Gorillas the 3-0 lead. That forced a SEO pitching change. Tiara Ewy tacked on another run as her base hit scored Guthier.
Southeastern Oklahoma scored one run in the second and two in the fourth.
Morgan Myers started the game in the circle for the Gorillas. She pitched three innings and gave up two runs on six hits. She struck out three batters and walked one. Bree Cornett came in to replace Myers in the fourth and earn the win. She gave up one run on four hits in two innings. She struck out four batters. Emmie Robertson pitched the final two innings to earn her first save of the season. She struck out four.
The Gorillas suffered their first loss of the season in the first game of the day in a 1-0 loss to Rockhurst.
Pitt State had only three hits in the game, while allowing Rockhurst six.
The game was scoreless until the bottom of the fifth when the Hawks scored the lone run of the game on a ground out after two hits, a fielder's choice and a walk.
Emmie Robertson took the loss in the circle. She struck out eight, walked two and gave up six hits.
Pitt State will travel to Bentonville, Ark. next weekend for the Arkansas-Monticello Challenge. The tournament was originally scheduled to take place on Saturday and Sunday, but has been moved to Friday (Feb. 10) and Saturday (Feb. 11) in anticipation of inclement weather on Sunday. The Gorillas will play Henderson State and Arkansas Tech on Friday and Harding and Arkansas-Monticello on Saturday.
