Two 2-1 Games End in Split for Gorilla Softball

JOPLIN, Mo. -- The Pitt State softball team played two 2-1 games with rival Missouri Southern on Saturday afternoon (March 25). The Lions won the first game in 10 innings, while the Gorillas took the second in seven innings.

Each team had six hits and three errors in the first game. The final Gorilla error made the difference in the game.

With the game tied 1-1 and neither team having scored since the fifth inning, the game started the 10th using international tiebreaker rules. A Missouri Southern error allowed Pitt State players to get to second and third, but they were halted there.

In the bottom of the 10th, Taurean Guzman was placed on second. The Gorilla defense mishandled Shelby Friend's bunt and an overthrow allowed Guzman to score for the win.

Pitt State scored first in the fourth. With two outs, Kala Holder, Lawren McKinney and Kristen Van Hoosen hit three consecutive base hits to load the bases. Katy Remy drew the bases loaded walk to score the first run of the game.

Missouri Southern tied the game in the bottom of the fifth on two hits.

Emmie Robertson took the loss in the circle. She threw nine innings, striking out 11 batters and walking four. Only one of the runs she gave up was earned. She is now 15-4 on the season.

Both teams had similar lines again in game two, each with seven hits and one error, but this time the Gorillas pushed the extra run across for the win.

The Gorillas scored first in the top of the third. Holder started the team with a two-out triple to right. She scored on Myka Hayward's base hit.

The Lions also used a triple and a base hit to tie the game in the bottom of the third.

Pitt State broke the tie in the top of the fourth. Remy led off the inning with an infield single. With two outs, Kaity Kukowski added an RBI double to left for the 2-1 score.

Bree Cornett pitched five innings in the win to improve to 6-3 on the season. She gave up six hits, struck out five batters and walked one. Robertson came in in the sixth inning to earn her third save of the season.
