Softball Scores Five Runs In Each Game of Doubleheader Sweep

HAYS, Kan. -- The Pitt State Softball team (28-10, 7-3 MIAA) scored five runs each each game of a doubleheader sweep over Fort Hays State on Friday (March 31) afternoon. The Gorillas won game one, 5-0, as pitchers Bree Cornett and Emmie Robertson combined for a no hitter. The team had to come from behind in game two to win 5-4.

Robertson earned the win in both games to improve to 19-4 on the season. In game one she pitched the first four innings. She allowed six base runners, as she gave up a walk and hit two batters and the Gorilla defense committed two errors. The last runner reached on a fielder's choice. In game two, the Gorillas were down 4-0 when Robertson entered the game. She pitched the final 5.2 innings, giving up three hits and a walk, but striking out 10 Tiger batters.

In game one, Cornett replaced Robertson to start the fifth innings. She retired all nine batters she faced, fanning five. She earned a save for her efforts, her first of the season.

Pitt State scored their first run of the day in the top of the third. Kukowski led off with a base hit and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Two walks loaded the bases for Myka Hayward who knocked a base hit through the right side to score Kukowski.

Two more runs came across in the fourth. Kukowski was again the igniter for the offense, this time getting her team started with a two-out double. She scored right away on Shelby Miller's base hit. Nease reached on an error to continue the two out rally. Miller came home on a Kala Holder base hit up the middle for the 3-0 lead.

The final two runs came in the sixth. With one out, Kukowski drew a walk. Miller added another base hit. Nease ripped a bse hit up the middle and the throw got away from the short stop, allowing Kukowski to score her third run of the game. Holder added another base hit up middle to bring home Miller for the final run of the game.

The second game started much differently. Two hits and a walk brought home to runs for the Tigers in the bottom of the first.

The Gorillas got one run back in the top of the second. Kris Van Hoosen hit a one-out triple to right, then scored on a Tiara Ewy sacrifice fly.

For Hays State immediately answered with two more runs on two more hits and a walk, taking a 4-1 lead. Robertson came in to replace starter Brittany Beaudet after the second run of the inning scored.

The Gorillas immediately answered in a big way. Nease started the offense with a one-out walk. Holder followed with a double to left center. With two outs, Lawren McKinney brought them both home with her double to left. Van Hoosen traded spots with McKinney with the third double of the inning to tie the game, 4-4. Ewy got the final RBI of the game with her base hit to left center to score Van Hoosen.

The Gorillas will take the field again on Sunday (April 2) at Noon and 2 p.m. against Nebraska-Kearney in Hastings, Neb. This is a change to the previous schedule due to inclement weather forecasted for tomorrow.
