ST. CHARLES -- The Pitt State softball team split a pair of one-run decisions with Lindenwood on Friday (April 14). The Gorillas took game one, 3-2, before falling in the second, 2-1. The Gorillas are now 35-13 on the season overall and 14-6 in MIAA play.
In game one, Pitt State scored its three runs on seven hits, while Lindenwood had two runs on five hits. Neither team committed an error.
The Gorillas scored first in the top of the second. Nicole Nease led off the inning with a home run to left. Kris Van Hoosen drew a one-out walk. She moved to second on a Tiara Ewy fielder's choice. Jenna Bolton hit a base hit to center to score Van Hoosen for a 2-0 lead.
Three hits, including a double and a triple, brought home two runs for Lindenwood in the bottom of the fifth to tie the game at 2-2.
PSU quickly took the lead back in the next half inning. Van Hoosen led off the inning with a base hit through the left side. A Ewy base hit up the middle moved her to second and a Bolton sacrifice bunt put her on third. Kaity Kukowski added a base hit to left to score Van Hoosen and give the Gorillas a 3-2 boost.
Emmie Robertson pitched all seven inning. She struck out six and walked one as her record improved to 25-5 on the season.
Game two saw the Lions with nine hits and Pitt State with eight.
The Lions scored early in the second and the Gorillas were never able to overcome that lead.
The Gorillas' lone run came in the fourth. With two outs, Myka Hayward knocked a base hit up the middle. Lawren McKinney added her second double of the game to earn the lone Gorilla RBI of the game.
Bree Cornett started the game in the circle for the Gorillas and took the loss to move to 7-5 on the season. Robertson replaced her in the fifth inning, giving up only one hit in the final two innings.
The Gorillas will travel to Jefferson City, Mo. to face Lincoln at 1 and 3 p.m.
