PITTSBURG -- The Pitt State Softball team improved to 39-13 on the season as they earned 3-2 and 2-1 wins over Missouri S&T on Tuesday (April 18) evening at the PSU Softball Complex.
The game one win gave Head Coach Elizabeth Economon her 200th career win at the helm of the Pitt State program. She is now 200-125 in her career. She has led the Gorillas to four consecutive 30-plus win seasonsand has never finished a season below .500 in her six year tenure.
The win was also the 27th of the season for junior hurler Emmie Robertson. Robertson is now 27-5 on the season. She is now 76-26 in her career and second for career wins.Â
Senior catcher Nicole Nease also added to her career RBI record. She broke the record of 172, previously held by Tiffany Brown in the first game against Lincoln on Saturday (April 15). Nease now has 176 career RBI.Â
The Gorillas took game one 3-2. Missouri S&T scored its two runs on five hits. The Gorillas put up three runs on seven hits and an error.
Pitt State scored first in the third inning with a two-out solo home run by Kala Holder.
The Gorillas took a 2-0 lead in the fourth. With one out, Lawren McKinney hit her second double of the game. Kris Van Hoosen reached on a fielder's choice that left McKinney safe at third. Van Hoosen went to steal second, leaving McKinney to make a move toward home. The catcher threw down to second and the throw to bring McKinney back to third got away, allowing her to score.
Back-to-back doubles by the Miners Monica Weiss and Olivia Young in the sixth brought the visiting team within one, 2-1.
Pitt State got that run back in the next inning. Van Hoosen got a two-out double and scored on a Tiara Ewy base hit to right.
The Miners added one run on a hit and an error in the top of the seventh for the final 3-2 score.
Emmie Robertson threw 6.2 innings to earn the win, her 27th of the season, setting the Pittsburg State single season wins record. She tied the previous record her freshman season. Renee Dunlap initially set the record of 26 in 1994.
Pitt State used the long ball to score both of its runs in the second game.
Missouri S&T scored first in the top of the first on a walk and a hit.
The Gorillas did not have an answer until the fourth when Nicole Nease hit her 10th home run of the season straight out in centerfield to tie the game at 1-1. With the home run, increased her Pitt State school record for career RBI to 176.
The Gorillas took the lead in the fifth on a towering home run to center by Jenna Bolton.
Pitt State will play its final home games this weekend. The team is scheduled to take on Northeastern State on Friday (April 21) at 3 p.m. and Central Oklahoma on Saturday (April 22) at 2 p.m. Saturday is Bark in the Park. Fans are invited to bring their dogs and prizes will be given away by local businesses including Pet Sense and ClawPaws. Saturday is also Senior Day. The team will honor seniors Nicole Nease and Tiara Ewy prior to the game.
