PITTSBURG — The University of Central Oklahoma softball team denied Pittsburg State University's bid for the program's first MIAA regular season title since 1994 Monday (Apr. 24) as the Bronchos beat the Gorillas 1-0 and 4-1.
The victories allowed UCO (43-9, 22-4 MIAA) to claim the MIAA regular season title outright. Pitt State (41-15, 18-8 MIAA) needed to sweep the Bronchos to force a share of the regular season crown.
Ashleigh Tramel hit a leadoff home run to break a scoreless tie in the top of the seventh inning of game one to provide the winning margin. UCO's Jayden Chestnut (19-3) and PSU's Emmie Robertson (28-6) blanked each opposing squad over the first six innings. Chestnut finished the game by scattering four hits and striking out nine batters. Robertson allowed five hits and fanned 12 batters.
Lawren McKinney doubled with one out in the bottom of the seventh, but the Gorillas were unable to push across a game-tying run.
In the nightcap, UCO scored built a 3-0 lead with runs in each of the first three frames against Brittanny Beaudet (3-3). A pair of Pitt State errors led to two unearned Bronchos runs.
Kala Holder drove in the Gorillas' lone run with an RBI double in the fifth inning.
Pitt State finished the regular season second in the MIAA standings. The Gorillas earned the No. 2 seed for the upcoming eight-team MIAA Postseason Tournament. Pitt State will face No. 7 seed Southwest Baptist University at 5 p.m. (CDT) Thursday (Apr. 27) at the ASA Hall of Fame Complex at Oklahoma City, Okla.
