PITTSBURG — The Northwest Missouri State University football team capitalized on a 21-point second quarter to build a 28-0 halftime advantage against Pittsburg State University en route to a 31-7 victory Saturday (Oct. 6) at Brandenburg Field/Carnie Smith Stadium.
The 16th-ranked Bearcats (5-1, 5-1 MIAA) snapped the No. 8 ranked Gorillas (5-1, 5-1 MIAA) 11-game winning streak dating back to the 2017 season. The win also helped Northwest climb into a tie for first place in the MIAA standings with Pitt State.
Isaiah Strayhorn rushed 11 times for 147 yards and a touchdown, while Braden Wright passed for 211 yards and a pair of scores. Alec Tatum added a 23-yard scoring jaunt on a fake field goal attempt with 34 seconds remaining in the first half.
Parker Sampson added a 38-yard fourth quarter field goal for the Bearcats' final score, after missing from 38 and 40 yards earlier in the game.
The Gorillas lone score came with 48 seconds remaining in the contest with Matt Harman tossed a 10-yard touchdown pass to Elijah Harris.
The Bearcats, who were seeking their third shutout of the season in the game, limited Pitt State to 268 total yards in the contest with 91 yards coming on the Gorillas' final offensive series.
John Roderique completed six of 17 passes for 63 yards, while Harman was nine of 16 for 87 yards. Tyler Adkins carried the ball 10 times for 67 yards in the contest.
Demetrius Bernard and Creighton Sanders paced the Gorillas with 10 tackles apiece, with Bernard making three stops behind the line of scrimmage.
