PITTSBURG—The Pittsburg State University volleyball team swept the Newman University Jets in Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) action at John Lance Arena/Whetzel Court Tuesday (Oct. 29).
The Gorillas won with set scores of 25-14, 25-16 and 25-20. With the win Pitt State improves to 12-12 overall and 7-8 in MIAA play. The Jets fall to 1-23 overall and 1-14 in conference action.
The first set was all Pitt State as the Gorillas grabbed an early lead and never looked back.The second set, however, saw the Gorillas jump out to an 8-1 lead, however, the Jets propelled themselves back into the set by closing the gap to a 14-13 score. Pitt State then went on the offensive and closed out the set with three straight service aces by the hand of Morgan Henning.
The third set was a hard fought battle that saw the Jets lead a majority of the set but Pitt State rallied and closed out the set for the win.
The Gorillas hit an outstanding .267 on the night as they posted 49 kills and had five aces. The Gorillas were paced by Meg Auten who has 12 kills and Morgan Henning who had 11 kills.
The Gorillas will host their home finale Saturday (Nov. 2) against Missouri Western. The Senior Day match is set for 6 p.m. (CDT).
