EMPORIA, Kan. -- Kaylee DaMitz led four Pittsburg State University women's basketball players in double figures with 15 points to help lead the Gorillas to a 70-67 road win over Emporia State University Thursday (Jan. 14) at historic William L. White Auditorium in downtown Emporia.
Pitt State (7-3, 7-3 MIAA) notched its sixth consecutive victory of the season by outscoring Emporia State (4-2, 4-2 MIAA), 5-0, in the game's final 53 seconds to break at 64-64 tie. The win by the Gorillas snapped Emporia State's 17-game home winning streak. The Lady Hornets last loss at White Auditorium came at the ands of Pitt State, 82-76, on Feb. 21, 2019.
Julia Johnson made one of two free throws with 25 seconds remaining to give the Gorillas a 65-64 lead. Tre'Zure Jobe and Fredericka Sheats both missed shots for the Lady Hornets and ESU sent Tristan Gegg to the foul line with eight ticks left. She made both charity shots to extend Pitt State's lead to 67-64.
Following Gegg's free throws, the Lady Hornets turned the ball over and DaMitz sank two free throws with three seconds to go for the game's final margin.
DaMitz made four of nine shots from the floor and finished with a team-leading 15 points. Maya Williams and Johnson added 13 points apiece, while Gegg chipped in with 10.
The Gorillas shot 41.4 percent from the field in the game (24-58) while limiting the Lady Hornets to a 36.4 percent clip (24-66).
Jobe led all scorers with 17 points to pace Emporia State.
Pitt State will return to action Saturday (Jan. 16) when the Gorillas travel to Topeka to battle Washburn University at 1 p.m. (CST) at Lee Arena.
