Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Gorillas Surge to First Ever MIAA Crown

JOPLIN, Mo. — The Pittsburg State University women's soccer team broke a scoreless tie in the 75th minute and added an insurance goal five minutes later to cap an amazing run by the Gorillas to the 2025 MIAA Championship Wednesday (Nov. 5).

Pitt State closed out the regular season with a 2-1 victory over Missouri Southern State University Wednesday (Nov. 5) at Hal Boden Field. The Gorillas victory over the Lions, coupled with Washburn University's scoreless tie against Emporia State University, Wednesday in Topeka, allowed the second-year Pitt State program to leapfrog the Ichabods atop the conference standings.

Pitt State, which debuted at No. 24 in the NCAA Division II United Soccer Coaches Top 25 poll Tuesday, ends the regular season on a six-match winning streak. The Gorillas improved to 14-2-2 overall and 9-1-2 in MIAA play, compiling 29 conference points (3 points per game, 1 point per tie).

No. 16 Washburn stumbled to 11-2-4 overall (8-0-3 MIAA) by ending the regular season with back-to-back draws against ESU and Missouri Western State University last Sunday (Nov. 2). The Ichabods finished the regular season with 25 conference points.

After playing to a scoreless tie at halftime, Pitt State's Mia Hunt got the Gorillas on the scoreboard by converting a penalty kick at 75:27 in the second half. Ella Cazzavillan drew the foul in the 18-yard box from MSSU's Preslee Ziegler.

Five minutes later, Pitt State's Shayla Hunt added a putback goal to effectively seal the victory. Ryann Caruth's bottom center shot was thwarted by MSSU's goalkeeper Bella Smith, but Hunt was there for the deflection and the tapper into the net.

MSSU (2-13-3, 0-10-2 MIAA) broke its scoreless drought with a cosmetic goal by Kennedy Williams in the 82nd minute, but Pitt State ran out the remainder of the clock to clinch the win and ultimately the conference crown.

Second-year head coach Wes Branstetter and the Gorillas will now await the release of the eight-team bracket for the 2025 MIAA Postseason Tournament. Pitt State will receive the No. 1 seed and a first-round home match-up at the Gorilla Soccer Pitch Sunday (Nov. 9) at 1 p.m. (CST).
