TAHLEQUAH, Okla. -- The Pittsburg State University men's basketball team rallied from a 13-point second half deficit to force overtime and eventually claim a 98-95 road win over Northeastern State University Saturday (Jan. 3) at the NSU Event Center.
Mason English scored 16 of his season-high 31 points in the second half to help fuel the Gorillas comeback.
Hayden Shanks, who finished with a season best 12 points, made one of two free throws with 0.9 seconds remaining in regulation to knot the score at 89-89 and force the extra session.
Connor Rogers put Pitt State (9-5, 3-1 MIAA) ahead for good for good, 94-93, with a 3-point play with 3:10 to go in OT.
Ethan Sage extended the margin to three points, 96-93, with 1:24 remaining.
NSU's Nehemiah Weber made a pair of free throws to trim the Pitt State lead to one, 96-95, with 59 seconds remaining. After the two squads traded turnovers,
David Cobin Jr. made one of two free throws to push the Gorillas' lead to 97-95.
NSU's A.J. Reed Jr. had a chance to tie it up but Rogers blocked his layup attempt and rebounded the miss. After a timeout, the RiverHawks fouled English and he made the back end of two free throws to provide the game's final three-point margin.
Rogers (17) and Sage (13) scored in double figures along with English and Shanks. Sage and Shanks posted eight rebounds apiece. Cobin Jr. and
Darrell Washington each chipped in with nine points in the contest.
Xavier Glenn and Ethan Blackmon scored 24 points apiece for the RiverHawks (8-5, 1-3 MIAA), while Reed chipped in with 18. Blackmon added a game-high 12 rebounds.
Pitt State will wrap up its current three-game road swing by traveling to Joplin, Mo., Tuesday (Jan. 6) to battle Missouri Southern State University at 7:30 p.m. (CST) at Robert Ellis Young Gymnasium.
