PITTSBURG — Clara Swearingen led three players in double figure scoring as the No. 11 ranked Pittsburg State University women's basketball team completed a wire-to-wire 68-58 victory over the University of Arkansas-Fort Smith Saturday (Jan. 31).

The Gorillas (15-4, 8-2 MIAA) shot 47.2 percent from the field and never trailed in the contest against the visiting Lions (3-17, 2-9 MIAA) at John Lance Arena/Whetzel Court. Swearingen finished with a game-high 17 points, while Kaycee McCumber added 16 points and a game-high 12 rebounds for her fifth double-double of the season.

UAFS, which trailed 36-24 at the intermission, opened the third quarter on a 13-3 run to get as close as two points, 39-37, on Jah'Mareah Linville's basket with 5:43 remaining in the period. Pitt State countered with back-to-back baskets by Swearingen and Marin Adams, who finished the game with 13 points and four assists to reassert control.

Swearingen made seven of 17 shots from the floor in the contest, including three 3-pointers. She also made four steals as the Gorillas forced the Lions into 17 turnovers. McCumber was a perfect 7-for-7 from the field and she scored 10 of her 16 points in the second half. Karolina Kariga scored three points and compiled three assists and two steals in 15 minutes of action. She had an assist, steal and a 3-point field goal during a one-minute burst early in the fourth quarter that helped Pitt State stretch a 52-48 cushion into a 59-50 margin.

Telisha Brown and Marie Rose Priscilla Wemba paced UAFS with 16 points apiece.

The Gorillas will face a quick turnaround with a home game Monday (Feb. 2) against Missouri Southern State University. The game was originally scheduled for Jan. 24 but scratched due to inclement weather. Tip-off is 6 p.m. Monday.
