PITTSBURG --
Ethan Sage hit a go-ahead 3-pointer with 41.3 seconds left in regulation and the Pittsburg State University men's basketball team staved off a pair of shots by Northwest Missouri State University to rally for a 68-67 win Saturday (Feb. 14) at John Lance Arena.
The visiting Bearcats (12-14, 5-10 MIAA) led by 10 points, 60-50, with 7:35 to play but the Gorillas (14-10, 8-6 MIAA) outscored them, 18-7, the rest of the way. NWMSU's Royce Williams completed a three-point play with 3:01 to play to give the Bearcats a 67-62 advantage, but Pitt State closed out the game on an 8-0 run.
Sage made nine of 12 shots from the field and posted a game-high 19 points.
Mason English added 17 points and
Donald Coats finished with nine points and a career best 17 rebounds.
Williams, who paced the Beracats with 18 points, missed a potential go-ahead basket with 21 ticks remaining, but English missed the front end of a 1-and-1 free throw opportunity to give NWMSU another chance to win it. Williams drove into the paint of the Bearcats final possession and the ball was knocked away into Aidan Gair's hand and his last-second shot came up short to let the Gorillas escape with the win.
Williams paced the Bearcats with 18 points, while Robert Garcia (11) and Gair (10) also finished in double figures.
The Gorillas will have a quick turnaround before getting back on the John Lance Arena hardwood Monday (Feb. 16) for their make-up game against Missouri Southern State University. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m. (CST).
