EMPORIA, Kan. -- Starter
Zach Voss tossed six strong innings and the Pittsburg State University baseball team posted a 6-2 victory over Emporia State University Saturday (Mar. 7) at Glennen Field.
The Gorillas, ranked No. 2 in the NCBWA Division II Top 25 poll and No. 3 in the ABCA D2 Top 30 poll, improved to 18-1 on the season (8-1 MIAA) after suffering their first loss of the season in the series opener Friday against the No. 15 ranked Hornets (14-4, 5-3 MIAA). The two squads will wrap up the three-game series with a 1 p.m. (CDT) contest Sunday.
Voss (6-0) remained unbeaten on the season by limiting ESU to a pair of runs and five hits. He issued two walks and fanned five batters.
The high-powered Pitt State offense, which was held in check Friday in a 14-2 loss, exploded for 13 hits.
Jadyn McNealy and
Landon Bruce had three hits apiece, while
Grant Nottlemann,
Landin Midgett and
Seth Dandridge each had two hits. The Gorillas overcame an early 2-0 deficit with a three-run fourth inning; and Pitt State tacked on insurance runs in the seventh, eighth and ninth frames.
Cooper Wesslund singled home Midgett with the go-ahead run in the fourth.
Cason Long worked two innings of relief behind Voss and
Cooper Crouch needed just 12 pitches to retire the Hornets in order in the ninth to lock down the win.
