Pitt State Athletics Academics: NCAA, MIAA & PSU Rules

CLASS ATTENDANCE
Students are expected to attend class regularly and participate fully in the activities of that class under the guidance of the instructor. The instructor is responsible for setting and communicating to the students the attendance requirements for each class. Students are responsible for clearing absences with each instructor.
In the event of an absence for athletic travel or competition, a class excuse letter and card will be provided for the student-athlete upon request. It is the student-athlete's responsibility, however, to communicate with the instructor regarding missed assignments or exams prior to the absence.

ENTRANCE TO MAJOR REQUIREMENTS
Some exist in many majors. Consult with the faculty advisor regarding grade-point average or prerequisite course requirements.

DECLARATION OF MAJOR
NCAA rules require all student-athletes to declare a major by the beginning of the third year of enrollment or fifth full-time semester.

GRADE APPEALS
If a student believes that an error has been made in the recording of a grade, an appeal may be pursued. The student should meet with his/her instructor in an attempt to resolve the matter. If the problem is not resolved, the student should use the relevant departmental grievance procedure.

HOLDS
Outstanding parking fines, unreturned equipment or books, or unpaid fees may prohibit a student from registering for classes or obtaining grades and transcripts.

ADD/DROP
Changes from one course to another may be approved if sufficient reason is given. On an add/drop card from the Registrar's Office, obtain the faculty advisor's signature. Take the card to the Registrar's Office to make the schedule change. Remember to check the University catalog or semester schedule for add/drop deadlines.

DEGREE CHECKS
When a student has earned 85 credit hours (including current enrollment), a degree check can be obtained. The student must apply for a degree check in the Degree Checking Office, 105 Whitesett Hall. The check will list all the courses necessary to complete requirements for the student's specific degree.

INCOMPLETE GRADES
Incompletes must be completed within one year from the date they were given. If a course is not completed, it will be regarded as a failure.

FULL-TIME STATUS
Student-athletes must be enrolled in a minimum of 12 hours each semester in order to be eligible for intercollegiate practice and competition and institutional financial aid.

GPA REQUIREMENTS
Based on the number of seasons of intercollegiate competition used, grade-point average requirements exist for all student-athletes. The GPA requirement must be achieved in grades earned only at the certifying institution (transfer grades prior to initial enrollment at PSU are not included). Check with the Athletic Academic Advisor regarding the specific requirements.

SATISFACTORY PROGRESS
Progress toward a four-year baccalaureate degree must be made by each student-athlete after he/she has declared a major program of studies. After the beginning of the third year or fifth full-time semester, all credits taken by the student-athlete must count toward his/her declared major.
