Box Score MARYVILLE, Mo. -- The Pittsburg State Volleyball team (11-9, 2-6 MIAA) played only its second five-set match of the season, this time coming out on top, defeating the Northwest Missouri Bearcats (11-11, 5-4 MIAA) 3-2 on Sunday evening.
Only one set was decided by more than two points. The Bearcats took the first set 29-27. Pittsburg State came back to take the next two. 28-26 and 26-24. Northwest Missouri evened the match with a 25-19 win in the fourth set, the only set to be decided by more than two points and the only to be decided by the regulation points as well.
Nicole Rockhold led the Gorillas with 17 kills and 21 digs. Crystal Whitten added 11 kills. Christa McCaw and Sam Wyatt also tallied double figure digs with 11 and 12, respectively. Becca Pearson had 27 assists and Hayley Hansford added 14. Leah Flynn and Brooke Fay led teh team in blocks with four a piece.
Statistically, the Bearcats Fared better than Pitt State in many areas. The Bearcats hit .220 compared to .109 for the Gorillas. They also outblocked Pitt State 10.0 to 7.0. The Gorillas just got their hits and blocks at more timely points in the match resulting in the win.
Northwest's Brooke Bartosh and Abby Graves led all players with 22 kills a piece. Tori Beckman led all players with 38 digs.
The Gorillas will face Truman on Friday, October 19 at 7 p.m. in Kirksville.
