Russ Jewett Outdoor Track & Field Complex
Pittsburg State University's new outdoor track and field facility has officially been dubbed the Russ Jewett Outdoor Track & Field Complex in honor of legendary Gorillas coach Russ Jewett.
A dedication ceremony was held at the finish line on the track during day one of the 2026 MIAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships (May 1), featuring a speech on Jewett's career and a team-effort ribbon cutting ceremony.
Jewett led the Pittsburg State men's and women's track and field programs for over 35 years before retiring in 2021.
Throughout his career in Pittsburg, Jewett brought home MIAA Coach of the Year honors 46 times, leading his squads to a combined 55 conference championships spanning the CSIC and MIAA.
Furthermore, Jewett played a part in coaching over 300 All-American performers and 36 individual national champions while leading both the Gorillas men's team and women's team to the University's first track and field national championships.
The women's team first claimed a national title in 2016 while the men were first crowned in 2018.
Retired since 2021, Jewett has been recognized for his contributions in the world of athletics numerous times, including inductions into the Kansas Sports Hall of Fame (2023), the Pittsburg State Athletics Hall of Fame (2023) and the MIAA Hall of Fame (2024).
In 2025, Jewett was also inducted into the USTFCCCA Coaches Hall of Fame, considered the highest national coaching honor in the sport of track & field.
