PITTSBURG, Kan. -- The No. 3 Washburn Lady Blues (27-1, 13-1 MIAA) got the best of PIttsburg State Volleyball team (12-13, 13-10 MIAA), 3-0, in John Lance Arena on Friday night (November 2).
The Lady Blues won the first set easily, 25-9, but the Gorillas came out more spirited in sets two and three resulting in closer scores, 25-22 and 25-21. In fact, set three saw Pitt State with the led late in the set. The Gorillas were down 9-4, but went on a 5-0 run on Crystal Whitten's serve to tie the set 9-9. The teams traded points until a big block by Olivia Roland and Paula Okrutna gave the Gorillas a 12-11 lead. Though there were ties at 13, 15 and 16, Pitt State did not surrender the lead to Washburn and built as much as a three point lead at 20-17 on a kill by Whitten. From there Washburn went on a 8-1 run to seal the set and the match.
Pitt State hit only .065 for the match compared to .264 for the Lady Blues. The Gorillas had their best hitting percentage of the match in set two when they hit .191 on 14 kills in 47 attempts with only five errors. The Lady Blues hit .400 in set one and recorded no errors in that set. Washburn tallied 9.0 team blocks to 3.0 for Pitt State. Five of the Washburn blocks came in the first set alone. Pitt State ended up with one more dig than Washburn, 62-61.
The Gorillas were led by Crystal Whitten with nine kills. Nicole Rockhold added eight. Sam Wyatt led the team with 13 digs, while Whitten added 12. Olivia Roland, despite playing only one set, let the team in blocks with two, both assisted. Pitt State had five service aces on the night, including two each from Okrutna and Whitten.
Washburn's Jessica Fey and Kelsey Lewis led all players with 11 kills a piece. Courtney Churchman led with 14 digs. Marissa Cox and Jessica Kopp were important at the net for the Lady Blues as Cox finished the night with six blocks, including two solo, and Kopp added five.
Pitt State will return to action on Saturday, November 3 at 6 p.m. against Emporia State. All fans with a ticket stub from PItt State's football game against Lindenwood get in to the match free.
