Box Score EDMOND, Okla. -- The Pittsburg State Volleyball team battled through five sets to beat the Central Oklahoma Bronchos, 3-2 (22-25, 25-20, 25-20, 23-25, 15-11), on Tuesday evening (November 6).
Pitt State was led by Crystal Whitten with a season-high 20 kills and she added 12 digs for a double-double. Nicole Rockhold added 18 kills and led the team with 17 digs. Leah Flynn added 11 kills and Sam Wyatt had 15 digs to round out players in double figures in those categories for the Gorillas. Each of the setters also had double figure assists, Becca Pearson with 29 and Hayley Hansford with 27.
Brooke Fay led Pitt State in blocks with five, as the Gorillas earned 9.0 team blocks on the night. Whitten had four blocks and Paula Okrutna added three.
The two teams were very evenly matched. Pitt State hit .200 for the match compared to .180 for the Bronchos. The teams were exactly equal in the digs category with 79 a piece. Pitt State had one less service ace, but the Bronchos had 11 service aces to six for the Gorillas. Central Oklahoma had four more blocks with 13.0, but where Pitt State won the match was 15 more kills, 68 to 53.
The first set was a battle with five ties and three lead changes and the home team eventually winning out. The next two sets saw seven ties between them, but only one lead change as the Gorillas took control to win both by scores of 25-20. The fourth set saw both teams hit over .350 with 11 tie scores and four lead changes, including as late as 23-23 before the Bronchos won 25-23. Pitt State led from the first point in the fifth set to secure the match with a 15-11 win.
Morgan Roy led the Bronchos with 15 kills and Talia Stanley added 14. Tate Hardaker led all players with 20 digs. Stanley and Faith Harmon led all players with six blocks a piece.
Pitt State will play its final home game at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, November 9 against Missouri Western in John Lance Arena.
