Pittsburg, Kan. -- PSU begins its 2013 conference schedule with a pair of MIAA games this week. Pitt State plays host to the Bronchos of Central Oklahoma on Thursday (Dec. 6) before hitting the road to take on the Lindenwood Lions in St. Charles on Saturday (Dec. 8).
Scouting Central Oklahoma
Central Oklahoma is 5-1 on the year, with their lone loss coming in the first game of the season against Minnesota-Duluth. Since then the Bronchos have defeated four of their five opponents by at least 15 points.
The team is averaging 69.5 ppg while holding their opponents to 59.3 ppg. UCO is shooting .419 (153-of-365) from the field, including .324 (34-105) from beyond the arc. Central Oklahoma is shooting .706 (77-109) from the charity stripe as well. Both them and their opponents are averaging 39.5 rebounds per contest. They force their competition into 20.5 turnovers per game while only committing 18.8 turnovers themselves per contest.
Alyssa Fuxa is the team’s top player, averaging 15.8 points, 7.0 rebounds and 2.5 assists per game. She is shooting .480 (36-of-75) from the field through six games. McKenzie Solberg is the second-leading scorer averaging over double-digits with 10.5 points per game. She also pulls down 5.3 rpg. The other Broncho averaging in double figures is Jill Bryan. Bryan adds 10.3 points and 6.2 rebounds per game. She is also second on the team in assists (18) and steals (9).
Scouting Lindenwood
The Lions defeated Fontbonne University in their season opener 92-57, but since then the team has dropped four straight contests heading into their MIAA opener against Northwest Missouri on Wednesday (Dec. 5).
The team is shooting .420 from the field, .411 from three point range and .633 from the free throw line. The Lions average 66.8 ppg while surrendering 71.8 ppg to their opponents. The team out rebounds their competition 41.8-35.2 rpg.
Lindenwood currently has one player scoring in double figures, Tori Kuhn. She is leading the team in scoring (13.6 ppg) and rebounding (8.0 rpg). Kuhn is also tied for the team-high with eight steals on the season. Julie Hlinak is the second leading scorer for the Lions, averaging 9.6 ppg.). In Quincy’s last outing against Truman she was the team’s leading scorer with 13 points. Cierra Young and Maggie Cunningham come off the bench and add 7.8 ppg and 7.5 ppg, respectively. Caroline Bourlioux and Sarah Schnieders chip in with 9.4 and 8.7 ppg, respectively. Boulioux is the teams second leading rebounder, averaging 5.6 rpg. Schnieders is shooting .526 (10-of-19) from the field.
Scouting Pittsburg State
The Gorillas split a pair of games against GLVC opponents William Jewell and Quincy last week. Pitt State fell to the Cardinals from William Jewell 66-68 as a Roberts three as time expired rimmed out. PSU then rebounded to defeat Quincy 71-65.
PSU has averaged 74.5 points and 37.7 rebounds per game in their first six games. The team is shooting .468 overall and .308 from three point range. They have hit 73 percent of its shots from the charity stripe. PSU’s defense has been able to hold its opponents to 54.2 ppg and 36.0 rebounds per game. The Gorillas have forced their competition into 115 turnovers while only committing 77 so far this season.
Lizzy Jeronimus has opened her sophomore campaign averaging 20.5 points and 5.7 rebounds. She is also second on the team with 13 assists. Morgan Westhoff is second on the team in scoring while coming off the bench. She is adding 9.7 points per game, as she hit 21-of-45 shots from the floor overall. She recorded a team-high 16 points in the loss to William Jewell. Lauren Brown is averaging 8.5 ppg. She is the teams top rebounder, pulling down 6.3 rpg and has also recorded a team-high nine blocked shots. Brown is shooting .550 (22-of-40) from the field. Drew Roberts is averaging 8.3 points. She is is leading the Gorilla with 14 assists. Hailey Roderique chips in with 6.0 ppg and 4.5 rpg. She is leading the team with nine steals.
PSU vs. Central Oklahoma
The Gorillas and Bronchos have met 19 times with PSU holding a 12-7 series advantage. The first meeting between the two teams on November 20, 1982 resulted in the Gorillas’ falling by a score of 58-77.
In the last five meetings the two sides have alternated victroies with the Gorillas emerging victorious the last time the two sides met. PSU won 76-71 in Pittsburg on Nov. 22, 2011.
The longest winning streak in the series is PSU’s six game streak from 1992-1998. During that time the five of the six Pitt State victories were by 12 or more points.
PSU vs. Lindenwood
Pitt State is a 1-0 all-time against the Lions. The only time the two teams have met was Dec. 20, 1997. Pitt State won the game 84-52 in Pittsburg.

The Gorilla men and women will head to Las Vegas, Nev. to participate in the Las Vegas Challenge. The women will play Academy of Art-San Francisco on Dec. 18 at 2 p.m. and then take on Dixie State on Dec. 19 at 6 p.m.
