ST. CHARLES, Mo. -- The Pitt State men earned a hard-fought, two-overtime battle over Lindenwood, 85-79 in St. Charles on Saturday (December 8) afternoon.
The deciding factor was great defense by the Gorilla squad in the second overtime. Pitt State did not allow Lindenwood to score in the last 1:20 of the game. In that time, Pitt State scored six points, including four by Rico Pierrevilus, for the win.
Courtney Ingram led five Pitt State players in double figures with 17. A.J. Adams added 15, Pierrevilus and Kaleb Porter, 13 and JaVon McGee, 10. McGee and Adams led the Gorillas with nine rebounds a piece.
Pitt State led 34-28 at the half. Lindenwood opened the game with a 7-2 lead, but Pitt State came back to tie the game at 7-all. With Lindenwood leading 10-7, Pitt State went on a 7-0 run to lead 14-0. The Gorillas held the Lions without a shot from the floor from 14:16 to 9:07, though the home team did make four free throws. Pitt State was able to go up 25-16. Although Lindenwood would chip at the lead some, Pitt State was able to stay infront and did not let their lead drop below six points.
Lindenwood worked their way into a tie at 42-42 with 12:53 left in the game. The Lions took their first lead since the 14:16 mark in the first half with 12:15 left, 45-44. The Gorillas got into a five-point deficit at 54-49, but then were able to hold the Lions without a made shot from the floor for over three minutes, allowing Pitt State to take a 55-54 lead. Lindenwood regained the lead and built it back up to 63-57. PItt State was able to work its way back in, closing the gap to 64-63 with 1:18 on the clock. The Lions stretched the lead back to three, but a made layup by A.J. Adams, with a Lindenwood foul and an Adams free throw tied the game at 66-66 with 0:49 seconds left. The Gorillas played great defense on the Lions' last possession to keep the game tied and send it to overtime.
The first overtime went back and forth, but each team was only able to score seven points. Neither team scored in the last 1:13 of the first overtime, keeping the game knotted at 73-73.
