Women's Basketball Earns First Conference Win

ST. CHARLES, Mo. -- Five players scored in double figures to help the Pitt State women's basketball team earn its first MIAA win of the 2012-13 season and the Gorillas earned an 82-65 win over Lindenwood on Saturday (December 8) afternoon.

Lizzy Jeronimus led all players with 20 points, all of which she scored in the second half. Morgan Westhoff finished with 15, 13 of which she scored in the first half. Hailey Roderique and Brigit Hesser each recorded career highs with 13 and 11 points, respectively. Alexa Bordewick was also in double figures with 10. 

Roderique also pulled down her first career double-double as she had 10 rebounds on the game. Lauren Brown led the Gorillas with 15 rebounds. Bordewick and Hesser each recorded four assists, while Jeronimus has three.

PItt State shot 39 percent from the floor for the game, including 41 percent from three-point range. The team outrebouned Lindenwood 49-32.

Pitt State shot well in the first half, especially from long range. The team was 8-for-17 with a 3-for-3 performance from Westhoff, two threes from Bordewick and one each from Roderique, Hesser and Cathy Brugman. Westhoff opened the game with three conecutive makes form long range. Later, Bordewick hit back-to-back threes, followed by one from Hesser, giving PItt State a 29-16 lead with 6:31 to go. 

The Gorillas opened the second hald on an 7-0 run, fueled by five points from Jeronimus. The Pitt State scoring cooled off at about the 15 minute mark in the second half, as Lindenwood fouls disrupted the offensive flow. Twenty of the Gorillas 45 second half points were from the free throw line.

Pitt State will now have 10 days off before its next game. The Gorillas travel to Las Vegas for the Las Vegas Challenge on December 18 and 19. The team will face Academy of Art at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, December 18 and Dixie State at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, December 19.
