Volleyball Defeats East Central and Saint Leo

BOLIVAR, Mo. -- The Pittsburg State continued its early season success with wins over East Central (Okla.) and Saint Leo on Friday at the Purple Bash hosted by Southwest Baptist. The Gorillas defeat East Central, 3-0, and handed the Saint Leo Lions their first loss of the season, 3-1.

Fifteen Gorillas saw action against East Central, as PSU won the match by scores of 25-18, 32-30 and 25-15. 

Pitt State hit .336 as a team, while holding East Central to .155. The team also recorded 8.0 blocks and five service aces.

Five different Gorillas recorded double figures in three different categories. Brooke Fay led the team with 10 kills in the match. Becca Pearson recorded 26 assists and Hayley Hansford added 17. Sam Wyatt led the team with 18 digs, while Crystal Whitten added 12. Four different players, Fay, Whitten, Paula Okrutna and Chloe Foster, led the team in blocks with three block assists a piece. Whitten also added eight kills, Okrutna, seven, and Foster, seven. 

East Central had two players with double figure kills, Megan Waiki with 11 and Noelle Cope with 10. Tatiana Booth was just under double figures with nine.

The Gorillas played a tight match with Saint Leo. Pitt State took the first two sets, 25-17 and 25-23, before a long third set saw PSU fall 31-29. The Gorillas gathered their energy and regrouped for the fourth set to win 25-21 and take the match. 

For the second match in a row, the Gorillas hit for over .300 in the match, this time recording a .308 hitting percentage. That was fueled by outstanding performances from Okrutna and Fay. Okrutna put down a season high 18 kills with only three errors in 32 attempts for a .469 clip. She also added three blocks. Fay finished the night with 12 kills and no errors on 21 attempts for an impressive .571 hitting percentage. She also added a team-high five blocks (two solo, three assisted).

Rockhold was just under double figure kills with eight and added 10 digs and three service aces. Wyatt led the team with 15 digs. Christa McCaw and Pearson each added nine digs. Pearson was only a dig short of a double-double as she recorded 31 assists for the Gorillas.

Pitt State's blocking continued to be a high point, as the team recorded 8.0 blocks to just 5.0 for its opponent.

Saint Leo had four players record double digit kills and were led by Lauren Campbell. Campbell recorded a double-double with 16 kills and 10 digs.

The Gorillas continue Purple Bash play on Saturday with matches against Harding and Christian Brothers at 11 a.m. and 3:30 p.m.
