Addison, Lions Hold Off Gorillas, 87-80

JOPLIN, Mo. – Marquis Addison scored 23 of his career-high 34 points in the first half to spark Missouri Southern to a 87-80 victory over Pittsburg State Wednesday (Jan. 16) at the Leggett & Platt Athletic Center.
 
The Gorillas (11-4, 4-3 MIAA) trailed 42-37 at halftime and never managed to overtake the Lions (9-5, 4-2 MIAA) in the second half. Pitt State, which trailed by as many as 11 points in the contest, got as close as one point of Southern, 73-72, with 3:50 to play.
 
Addison bested his previous career best of 33 points in the Lions’ 96-92 double overtime win over the Gorillas in Joplin a year ago.
 
Rico Pierrevilus led Pitt State with 21 points and 12 rebounds. JaVon McGee added 19 points and nine rebounds, while Courtney Ingram (12) and Marky Nolen (10) also scored in double figures.
 
Pitt State shot just 40.3 percent from the field (27 of 67) but the Gorillas owned a 21-7 advantage in offensive rebounds against the Lions.
 
Stephen Atkinson added 21 points for Southern, while Cameron Cornelius chipped in with 13 points.
 
The Gorillas will return to action Saturday (Jan. 19) when they host MIAA rival Fort Hays State University at 3:30 p.m. (CST).
