Gorillas Win Non-Conference Match Over Lions

JOPLIN, Mo. – The Pittsburg State Volleyball team evened its record at 10-10 with a 3-0 non-conference road win over Missouri Southern on Wednesday (Oct. 16) evening.

Pitt State recorded a .287 attacker percentage for the match and tallied four team blocks. Both teams recorded the same number of kills, but Pitt State had five fewer hitting errors than the Lions. The Gorillas  also served well with eight service aces, three by freshman Maggie Highberger.

Crystal Whitten led Pitt State with 16 kills. Madi Mosier added nine and led the team with a .471 attack percentage. Jordan Rehm led all players with 15 digs.  

The Gorillas took set one 25-23. Mosier led the team with six kills in eight attempts for a .750 attack percentage. Pitt State had 15 kills in the set with assists on 14 of those kills. The Gorillas hit .333 as a team. Pitt State led by as many as six points in the set, 16-10, but Missouri Southern went on a 6-1 run to narrow the Gorilla lead to one at 17-16. The Lions were able to tie the set at 19-19, but the Gorillas pushed to pull ahead. Pitt State had its first chance for set point at 24-22, but Missouri Southern got one more point in before the Gorillas scored the final point on a kill by Highberger.

In set two, Pitt State hit at a lower percentage, but won by more, 25-18. Whitten led the team with four kills in the set to total nine for the match after two.  The Gorillas trailed by two at 9-11, before going on a seven point run on Highberger's serve to go up 16-11. Highberger served up three aces during the run.

The Gorillas won set two 25-21. The team led by nine three times, including as late as 21-12. Missouri Southern mounted a comeback and narrowed the lead to three before Pitt State was able to secure the win. Whitten added seven kills in the final set.

Pitt State will travel to St. Louis, Mo. for the Maryville Triangular on Saturday (October 19). The Gorillas will take on William Jewell at 2 p.m. and host Maryville at 6 p.m.
