WICHITA, Kan. – Marquis Cuyler made one of two free throws with 0.8 second remaining to lift Newman University to an 80-76 victory over Pittsburg State University Wednesday (Nov. 13) at Fugate Gymnasium.
 
Sam Pugh missed a potential game-tying 3-pointer with just under two seconds to play for the Gorillas.
 
Newman and Pitt State traded the lead 14 times in a back-and-forth contest.
 
The Gorillas last led, 75-74, on a 3-pointer by Pugh with 3:31 to play in the contest. Pugh made one of two free throws with 3:54 to play after the Jets' Elhad Emerllahu was called for a flagrant foul on Pitt State's Devon Branch.
 
Branch scored a game-high 20 points before exiting the game due to injury on the flagrant foul. Pugh and Jake Bullard added 17 points apiece for the Gorillas.
 
Jack Pyle led four Newman players in double figures with 19 points. Ryan McCarthy added 13 points, while Jeremy Espinoza and Emerllahu added 12 apiece.
 
The Gorillas (0-1) shot 49 percent from the field in the game (24 of 49) compared to 45 percent shooting (29 of 64) by the Jets (1-1). Pitt State outscored Newman, 23-16, at the foul line, but the Gorillas made just two of six charity shots in the final 5:33.

Pitt State, which led by as many as seven points in the first half, committed 23 turnovers in the contest compared to 13 by Newman.
 
Pitt State will return to action next Tuesday (Nov. 19) when the Gorillas travel to Liberty, Mo., to face William Jewell at 7:30 p.m. (CST).
