ROLLA, Mo. -- The Pittsburg State women's basketball team traveled to Rolla, Mo. for a game against Central Region opponent Minnesota-Duluth from the Northern Sun Conference and will come back to Pittsburg with a 82-75 win and an improved 3-2 record.
Pitt State had another good shooting game, finishing with a 52.5 percent shooting percentage for the game, including 42.9 percent from three-point range. The Gorillas also outrebounded the Bulldogs, 44-34. The team was able to overcome 22 turnovers and 22 points off those turnovers by UMD for the win.
Lizzy Jeronimus led the Gorillas with a double-double, 20 points and 10 rebounds. She also had four assists. Alexa Bordewick added a season-high 18 points. She was 3-of-6 from three point range. Brigit Hesser came off the bench to score 11 points. Hailey Roderique pulled down seven rebounds.
The game was back and forth in the early minutes, but a three by Morgan Westhoff with 11:05 to go in the first half gave Pitt State the lead that they would not surrender again. The Bulldogs tied the game at 25-25, but Pitt State went on a 6-0 run to go up 31-25 with 6:13 in the opening half. An Antqunita Reed layup just two minutes later gave the Gorillas their largest lead of the first half, 37-28. The Bulldogs would cut Pitt State's lead to two with 21 second left, but Bordewick nailed a three in the last five second for a 44-39 half time score.
Bordewick started the second half the same way she ended the first, with a three, and Y'Cedria Devers added a layup for the Gorillas first double digit lead of the game, 49-39. The Bulldogs whittled the lead down to two with 13:32 left, but Pitt State answered with a 6-0 run to stretch the lead back to eight. From there UMD was not able to get closer than four and Bordewick free throws with 13 second remaining sealed the 82-75 win.
Pitt State will travel to Liberty, Mo. on Tuesday, November 19 for a doubleheader with William Jewell. The women's game begins at 5:30 p.m., with the men's following.
