WARRENSBURG, Mo. -- The PIttsburg State Volleyball team's season ended with a 3-0 (25-17, 28-26, 25-10) loss to Central Missouri (30-1) in the first round of the MIAA Tournament at the UCM Multipurpose Building on Tuesday (November 19) evening.
The Gorillas end their season with a 16-16 overall record and were 6-10 in league play.
Abbie Smith led the Gorillas with six kills. Haylee Gregory, Â Paula Okrutna and Maggie Highberger each chipped in four. Kirsten Erikson led the team with 10 digs. Jordan Rehm added nine and Madi Mosier, eight. Okrutna and Gregory each had four blocks, as Pitt State outblocked the No. 5 ranked Jennies, 9.0 to 6.0.
The first set was tight, with the Gorillas within three or four of the Jennies until late in the set, when a 6-1 run resulted in the 25-17 loss.Â
The second set was much closer. The team's traded sideotuts and Pitt State kept the set within two until a 4-0 run gave the Jennies a 15-11 advantage. Pitt State battled back with a 4-0 run of its own to tie the set at 15-15 on a big block by Okrutna and Highberger.Â
A kill by Okrutna gave the Gorillas their first lead of the match at 17-16 and a UCM attack error gave Pitt State a two-point advantage. The Jennies came back to tie the set at 18-all, but a service error gave the Gorillas the lead again.Â
The Jennies went on a three-point run to take a 22-20 lead, but Pitt State continued to battle and tie the set. The two team's tied at every point from then on until UCM scored the final two points to take the set 28-26.
The final set was all Central Missouri, as the Jennies went on several big runs to win the match with the 25-10 win.
