Buffs Use Second-Half Run to Rally Past Gorillas, 70-58

CANYON, Texas -- West Texas A&M University used a 17-0 second-half run to turn a 43-40 deficit into a 57-43 lead as the Buffs pulled away down the stretch for a 70-58 win over Pittsburg State University Saturday (Nov. 30) in the final game of the WTAMU Thanksgiving Shootout.

Josiah Gustafson made a pair of free throws to give Pitt State (3-3) a 43-40 lead with 11:12 to play in the game, but the Gorillas committed seven turnovers in their next eight possessions. In the mean time, WTAMU went 6-for-6 from the field to surge in front of Pitt State.

Drimir Ferguson scored a team-leading 21 points for the Buffs (4-3), while four other players -- Keon Pledger, Tez Dumars, Antjuan Ball and David Gibbs -- all scored 10 points:

Devon Branch led all scorers with 24 points for the Gorillas. Branch scored 17 of his 24 in the first half as Pitt State built a 33-27 lead.

Ethan Cordray added nine points for Pitt State, which shot just 32 percent from the field for the game (20 of 52) and committed 19 turnovers.

The Gorillas will return to action Thursday (Dec. 5) when they travel to Maryville, Mo., to open MIAA play against Northwest Missouri State University.
