Hoops Teams to Determine Postseason Seeding With Senior Day Games Saturday

PITTSBURG — The Pittsburg State men’s and women’s basketball teams will help solidify their postseason fates Saturday (Mar. 2) when the Gorillas host MIAA rival Emporia State in the regular season finale.

The women’s tipoff is set for 1:30 p.m. (CST) with the men’s game to follow at 3:30 p.m. at John Lance Arena/Whetzel Court.  Seven seniors – Lauren Brown, Lisa Elmer and Drew Roberts for the women and Courtney Ingram, JaVon McGee, Marky Nolen and Rico Pierrevilus for the men – will be honored in ceremonies between games.

The Pitt State women are 17-8 overall and 11-6 in the MIAA, currently tied for sixth place in the MIAA standings (with Fort Hays State). ESU is 17-8 overall, 12-5 in the MIAA and tied for fourth place in the conference (with Truman).

The Gorillas need a victory over the Hornets and a Truman loss to NW Missouri State to climb to fourth in the MIAA standings and earn a bye in the first round of the 12-team MIAA Postseason Tournament, which starts on campus sites next Tuesday (Mar. 5).

If Pitt State does not climb to No. 4 in the standings, the Gorillas will finish as either the fifth, sixth or seventh seed in the league and host an MIAA Tournament game Tuesday at 7 p.m. against an opponent to be determined.

The Pittsburg State men are 16-9 overall, 9-8 in the MIAA and seventh in the MIAA standings (Lindenwood is not eligible for post-season play). ESU is 13-12 overall, 8-9 in the MIAA and eighth in the conference standings.

The winner of Saturday’s game between the Gorillas and Hornets will be the No. 7 seed in the MIAA Tournament. The Gorillas can finish no lower than eighth in the standings.

Pitt State will host a first-round MIAA Tournament game Monday (Mar. 4) at 7 p.m. against an opponent to be determined.
