PITTSBURG, Kan. .-- The Pittsburg State Volleyball lost matches to Southeastern Oklahoma, 3-1 (25-23, 25-23, 22-25, 25-21), and Ouachita Baptist, 3-0 (25-19, 25-23, 25-19), in the opening day of the Pitt State Classic.
Agaisnt Southeastern Oklahoma, the Gorillas tallied 51 kills, but also had 39 errors in 168 attempts to finish the match with a .071 hitting percentage. The Savage Storm hit only slightly better at .091. The visiting team also outblocked the Gorillas 8.0 to 5.0.
Crystal Whitten led the Gorillas with 17 kills and 17 digs. Paula Okrutna contributed 10 kills. Jordan Rehm and Taylor Wright each added 17 digs for Pitt State. Setter Hayley Hansford had a double-double with 40 assists and 10 digs. Madi Mosier led the team with three blocks.
Southeastern Oklahoma's Megan Kunkel led all players with 19 kills and 18 digs.
Ouachita Baptist outhit the Gorillas .233 to .089 in Pitt State's second game of the day. The Gorillas did win the block battle 5.0 to 2.0.Â
Whitten was the only player with double figure kills for Pitt State, finishing the game with 10. Rehm added 19 digs.
Pitt State will finish the tournament on Saturday with an 11 a.m. match against Rockhurst, who went 2-0 on Friday, and Missouri Western, who was 1-1.
