Box Score SIOUX FALLS, S.D. -- The Pittsburg State men's basketball team committed only five turnovers and came back from a 13-point deficit, only to fall in the last minute of the game, 75-68 to Northern State in the final day of the Sanford Pentagon Basketball Classic on Sunday (Nov. 16).
The game came down to the final minutes. Pitt State used a 9-0 run, fueled by seven points from Jake Bullard, to come within three, 49-46, with 10:26 left in the game. The Gorillas worked to stay within three to six points, but weren't able to get closer until a Devon Branch layup with 4:45 left left the Gorillas down by only one, 60-59. Another Branch layup almost two minutes later gave Pitt State its first lead since early in the first half. With 2:21 to go, a dunk gave Northern State its first points from the field for the first time since the 7:05 mark and allowed them to recover the lead. That momentum swing was all they needed, although Pitt State was able to keep it close, Northern State hung on for the 75-68 win.
The Wolves made more free throws in the game than the Gorillas attempted, as they went 28-for-45 from the line, while the Gorillas were only 16-for-20. PSU was called for 32 team fouls in the game and three players fouled out in the game's waning minutes. Pitt State was able to score 15 points off 13 Northern State turnovers, while only committing five themselves.
Josiah Gustafson led the Gorillas with 20 points and added five rebounds. BUllard scored 19 points, including a perfect 3-for-3 night from long range and 4-for-4 from the charity stripe. Devon Branch contributed 17 points and five rebounds.
Pitt State travels to Arkansas Tech in Russelville, Ark. on Wednesday (Nov. 19) for a 6 p.m. game.
