Gorilla Women Stun William Jewell

MARYVILLE, Mo. -- The Gorilla women's basketball team added another 30-plus point win with an 89-51 over William Jewell on Saturday afternoon at Bearcat Arena in its second game of the Winstead-Reeves Classic hosted by Northwest Missouri.

The Gorillas scored as many points in the second half as the Cardinals did in the entire game. Pitt State had only an 11-point, 38-27, lead at the half, but rolled through the second half. A Cathy Brugman layup with 7:38 to go gave Pitt State its first 20-point lead. The Gorilla defense was tough and held William Jewell without a shot from the floor from 10:57 to 1:01 in the second half, and only scored five points off free throws during that time.

Pitt State scored 34 points off 28 Cardinal turnovers. The Gorillas committed only 12 turnovers in the game, while shooting just over 50 percent from the floor. The team made only four threes in the game, but scored 56 points in the paint.

Lizzy Jeronimus led the Gorillas with a season-high 27 points. Cathy Brugman and Kylie Gafford each added 13 points. Gafford led the team in rebounds with seven. Hadyn Herlocker came off the bench to lead the team with steals.

Pitt State has a challenging week ahead. The team will travel to Kirksville, Mo. on Wednesday to take on Truman State who is 3-0 and receiving votes in the WBCA Poll. The Gorillas will go from there to Springfield, Mo. for the Doubletree/Houlihan's Thanksgiving Classic hosted by Drury. On Friday, Pitt State will face No. 3 Drury at 5:30 p.m., followed by a Saturday game at 7:45 p.m. against Rockhurst.
