TOPEKA, Kan. -- The Pitt State volleyball team fell to No. 14 Washburn on Friday (October 23) in Lee Arena, but a second set pushed to extra points showed the potential of the Gorilla team.
Set scores were 25-18, 28-26 and 25-8. The second set saw the Gorillas fight back from a deficit to even have a chance to win late before the Washburn offense finished the set. The Gorillas trailed 21-16 in set two and it looked like another sure win for the Ichabods. Then the Gorillas rattled off seven straight points on Taylor Wright's serve to take a 22-21 lead. Noelle Dooley put down three kills for Pitt State during that run. The two team's then traded points several times. It looked like Pitt State had Washburn on the ropes at 24-23, forcing the Ichabods to call a time out. Washburn tied the set out of the timeout, but the Gorillas immediately answered with another Dooley kill, again forcing set point. Once again, Washburn tied the match, and again Dooley put down a kill for Pitt State. The 26th point would be the last for the Gorillas though, as Leanna Willer had back-to-back kills for the Ichabods to win the set 28-26.
Dooley led the Gorillas in the match with 13 kills and only two errors for a .379 attack percentage. Maggie Highberger and Taylor Unke each added four kills. Ashlen Schwartz recorded 22 digs to lead all players in the match.
Pitt State will play the second of a five game road swing on Saturday at Emporia State at 4 p.m..
