Women's Basketball Adds Win Over Mary

Bismarck, N.D. -- The Pittsburg State women's basketball team improved to 2-0 on the season with a 62-49 win over the University of Mary (0-2) on Saturday night (November 14).

Sophomore Mikaela Burgess led the team with 19 points. She also had five rebounds, three assists and three steals. Elena Flott came off the bench to add 11 points. She shared the team lead in rebounds with Cathy Brugman and Hadyn Herlocker, each with six. Brugman scored eight points, while also dishing out three assists, grabbing two steals and bloking three shots. Herlocker also scored eight points and recorded two assits and two steals.

Mary committed 25 turnovers in the game and Pitt State capitalized on those to score 22 points. The Gorillas held Mary to .327 shooting from floor, but only shot .361 themselves, including .217 from long range.

The Marauders led the Gorillas after the first quarter 22-18 and led by as many as six early in the game. Pitt State led by two with just under a minute left in the first quarter, but back-to-back threes by Mary gave them the lead in the quarter.

Pitt State started the second quarter on a 16-1 run and did not allow the Marauders to make a shot from the floor until the 2:20 mark. The Gorilla defense held Mary to only six points in the quarter to lead 37-28 at the half.

Mary cut the Pitt State lead down to one, 39-38with just over four minutes left in the third quarter. Pitt State responded with a 10-0 run to take their largest lead of the game to that point, 49-38, on a Paige Imhoff layup.

A Burgess three with 7:43 left in the game put Pitt State up by double figures again and the lead would not dip below that for the rest of the game. The team's largest lead came on a Brugman layup with 5:54 to go.

The Gorillas will travel to Hays, Kan. next weekend to face Regis and St. Cloud State in the Hays Shootout. Tipoff against Regis will be FFriday at 5 p.m. and St. Cloud State will be Saturday at 2 p.m.
