HAYS, Kan. -- The Pittsburg State women's basketball team dominated St. Cloud State on Saturday (November 21) afternoon with an 87-48 win in the Tiger Basketball Classic at Gross Memorial Coliseum.
Pitt State took a 10-point lead with 3:30 to go in the first quarter and never looked back. The team opened the second quarter with a 12-0 run to take their first 20-point lead on a layup by Kylie Gafford. The start of the third quarter brought a 14-0 run that included two threes from Cathy Brugman and a three a piece from Mikaela Burgess and Hadyn Herlocker. A layup by Katren Rienbolt with a minute to go gave the Gorillas their largest lead of the game and the final 87-48 score.
Brugman finished the game with 22 points, as she was 7-for-10 overall and 6-for-9 from three-point range. She had a career game as she also pulled down five rebounds and dishes out five assists. Mikaela Burgess added 16 points, including three threes. Hadyn Herlocker rounded out the Gorilla double figure scorers with 10 points. Paige Lungwitz led the team with six rebounds. Brugman, Gafford and Maddie Northcutt each added five. Paige Imhoff came off the bench to lead the team in assists with seven.
The Gorillas shot .554 overall and .429 from three-point range. They had assists on 23 of their 31 made baskets. The Huskies were held to .333 shooting and 13 percent from beyond the arc. They made only nine shots in the second half. Pitt State was able to score 26 points off 18 St. Cloud State turnovers.
Pitt State will have about 10 days off before its next game, its home and MIAA opener on Wednesday, December 2 at 5:30 p.m. in John Lance Arena.
