PITTSBURG — Terrence Moore hit a driving, contested layup with 23 seconds remaining to break a 66-66 tie and Joshua Oswald sealed the game following a Pittsburg State University turnover with two free throws with six seconds to go as Emporia State University claimed a 70-66 win Saturday (Dec. 19) at John Lance Arena.
The Gorillas (7-5, 2-4 MIAA) found themselves down seven, 61-54, with 5:49 to play in the game against the Hornets (5-5, 3-2 MIAA), bit Pitt State scored the next nine points to go in front, 63-61, on Josiah Gustafson's 3-pointer with 3:24 remaining.
Pitt State still led 65-63 following a pair of free throws by Javis Flynn with 2:16 to go, but ESU's Micah Swank hit a baseline 3-pointer with 1:20 left. Trey Starks made one of two free throws for the GOrillas with 1:06 remaining to knot the score at 66.
Oswald finished with a game-high 19 points and eight rebounds to lead the Hornets, while Moore and Swank added 12 and 11 points.
Gustafson led three Pitt State players in double figures with 13 points. Starks finished with 12 and Lamine Dieng added 10.
