Gorilla Bench Outscores RiverHawks in 84-48 Win

PITTSBURG, Kan. -- The Pittsburg State women's basketball team earned 84-48 win over Northeastern State (10-13, 6-10 MIAA) on Wednesday (Feb. 18) in John Lance Arena. The Pitt State bench contributed 56 of the team's 84 points, including double figures from Cathy Brugman, Morgan Westhoff and Mikaela Burgess. 

The Gorillas, who it was announced today are ranked second in the Central Region, are now 24-3 overall and 14-2 in league play. 

Brugman scored 17 points in just 15 minutes off the bench for the Gorillas. Mikaela Burgess and Morgan Westhoff each scored 15 points, as they combined for nine of the team's 13 threes in the game. Burgess was 4-of-10 from behind the arc, while Westhoff was 5-for-11. Lizzy Jeronimus led the Gorillas with 18 points and nine rebounds. 

The Gorillas shot 58 percent in the second half, including 50 percent from three-point range, to finish the game with a .476 shooting percentage. The team dished out 21 assists, including a high of five from Haydn Herlocker, while only turning the ball over eight times. 

Pitt State went on a 16-0 run lasting just over three minutes in the middle of the first half to take a 26-9 lead. The RiverHawks never got closer than 12 from that point on and led 36-21 at the half. 

The Gorillas took their first 20-point lead on a Jeronimus jumper to lead 49-28 with 13:54 to go in the game. The final 36-point lead was secure on a three by Westhoff with 13 seconds to go.

Pitt State will take on rival Missouri Southern in the annual State Farm Trophy Series game on Saturday (Feb. 21) at 1:30 p.m. The Gorillas five seniors, Brigit Hesser, Lizzy Jeronimus, Nett Reed, Hailey Roderique and Morgan Westhoff will be honored immediately after the game.
