Box Score TOPEKA, Kan. -- The Gorilla men's basketball team struggled offensively in the second half at Washburn, falling 63-48 in the final regular season game of the season. The Gorillas finish the regular season 16-11 overall and 12-7 in league play.
The Gorillas earned the No. 5 seed in the MIAA Tournament. They will host 12th seeded Northeastern State at 7 p.m. on Monday in John Lance Arena.
Devon Branch led the Gorillas with 13 points. Lamine Dieng came off the bench to add 10. Josiah Gustafson scored nine, all in the second half.
Washburn was led by Korey Fisher and Kyle Wiggins, each with 13 points.
The first half was close for the whole 20 minutes. Washburn led by as many as seven with just over 20 minutes to go, but the Gorillas were able to close the gap to only trail by two, 26-24, at the half.
Pitt State started the second half with six unanswered points to take a 30-24 lead. After a Washburn timeout, the Ichabods came back within one. The two teams volley back and forth until back-to-back threes by Korey Fisher put the home team up by eight, 47-39, at the under 10 minute media timeout.
The Ichabods went up by a then game-high 12 points, 51-39, on a Kyle Wiggins jumper with 7:47 to go. Though the Gorillas were able to make some stops defensively, the offense struggled and Pitt State was held without a shot from the floor from 7:31 to 1:34 and was held to only seven points total in the last seven minutes of the game.
The Gorillas shot just 37 percent (9-for-24) in the second half, compared to 44 percent (13-for-29) for the Ichabods. Washburn also shot 38 percent from long range for the game, making eight threes, compared to just 17 percent for the Gorillas.
