ST. JOSEPH, Mo. --Â The Pittsburg State softball team finished the weekend strong with two wins over Northern State, 10-2, and Upper Iowa, 14-3, in the final day of the Apple Market Classic hosted by Missouri Western. Pitt State finished the tournament 3-3.
The Gorillas earned a 10-2 win over Northern State in six innings in the first game of the day. Pitt State scored its 10 runs on 14 hits and a Northern State error. The Wolves scored their two runs on eight hits and two Pitt State errors.
Five different Gorillas had multiple hits in the game, led by McKenzie Rynard with a 4-for-4 outing with a home run. She also scored a run and recorded four RBI. Cheslyn Mitchell was 3-for-4 in the game with a double, a triple, two runs scored and an RBI. Kylie Guthier and Jordan Bradshaw were each 2-for-3, each with a double. Bradshaw scored two runs, while Guthier scored one and added an RBI. Katy Remy went 2-for-4 with two runs scores and an RBI.
Zoe Price had another strong performance in the circle for the Gorillas. She struck out eight and walked one. Neither of the two runs given up were earned.
Pitt State got started  in the bottom of the first with back-to-back triples by Remy and Mitchell. Guthier added a base hit to score Mitchell for the 2-0 Gorilla lead.
With one out in the bottom of the second, Bradshaw hit a base hit back at the pitcher. She stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch. An error by the Wolves first baseman allowed her to score to put Pitt State up by three runs.
The Gorillas tacked on another run in the fifth. Guthier grabbed a two-out double and was hit home by a Rynard base hit.
Three hits and a Pitt State error led to two Northern State runs in the top of the sixth, reducing Pitt State's lead to 4-2.
Pitt State put up six runs in the bottom of the sixth to end the game by the eight run rule. Catie Cummins led off the inning with a home run. Bradshaw added a double, then scored on a one-out base hit up the middle from Remy. Mitchell added a double. Nease reached on a fielder's choice to load the bases. Guthier added another RBI with a sacrifice fly. Rynard ended the game with a three run home run to make the score 10-2.
Game two also saw the Gorillas win by the eight-run rule in six innings, 14-3 over Upper Iowa. Eight of Pitt State's nine batters had hits in the game. Seven of the 14 hits were for extra bases. Mitchell and Nease each went 3-for-4 with two runs scored. Nease had a double, a home run and five RBI. Mitchell added a double and four RBI.
Pitt State scored first in the top of the first as Nease plated Remy with a base hit to center.
The Peacocks took the lead and scored all of their runs off a three run homer in the bottom of the first.
Devon McCreath got the offense started again with a one-out walk in the top of the second. Cummins added a base hit to center field. With two outs, Pratt dropped a base hit in center that allowed McCreath to score and cut the Upper Iowa lead to one, 3-2. Remy was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Mitchell stepped up and hit a bases clearing double to give Pitt State back the lead, 5-3.
Neither team scored again until the fifth inning, when Mitchell started another Gorilla rally with her second double of the game. Nease added a two-run home run, her sixth home run of the season. Two outs later McCreath hit the Gorillas second home run of the game and her second of the season for an 8-3 lead.
Pitt State scored its final six runs in the top of the sixth inning. The first three batters of the inning reached safely to load the bases for Mitchell who added her fourth RBI of the day with a single to left. After several Peacock defensive changes, including in the circle, Nease took the first pitch she saw for a two-RBI double and an 11-3 Gorilla advantage. A Guthier ground out gave her and RBI as Mitchell came in to score from third. The final two runs came on a Rynard home run to center.
Despite a challenging first inning, pitcher Emmie Robertson gave up only three more hits in the remaining five innings. She struck out seven batters and walked two.
The Gorillas travel to Wichita on Wednesday to take on the Newman Jets at 3 and 5 p.m.
