Gorillas, Lions Split Non-Conference Twinbill Tuesday

JOPLIN, Mo. -- The Pittsburg State University baseball team split a pair of non-conference games against 29th-ranked Missouri Southern State University Tuesday (Mar. 24) at the MSSU Baseball Field. The Gorillas claimed a 9-7 win over the Lions in game one, before MSSU turned the tables on Pitt State in a 1-0 decision in the nightcap.

In game one, the Gorillas (7-16) capitalized on a five-run third inning to erase a 2-1 deficit and grab a 6-2 lead against the Lions (19-4). Pitt State added single runs in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings and withstood a two-runs sixth by MSSU to claim the 9-7 win.

Luke Bordewick went 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles and two RBI to lead Pitt State's nine-hit attack, while Derek Hackney went 2-for-3 with two runs scored.

The Gorillas scored five unearned runs in the third against MSSU starter Matt Harvey (1-2) thanks to five hits and a pair of MSSU defensive errors in the frame.

Drake Hermann (2-0) worked 2 1/3 innings of one-hit relief behind Pitt State starter Nick Brandecker. Ryan McKay earned his third save of the season by recording the final five outs for the Gorillas.

In game two, MSSU starter Sean Goostree (2-0) held the Gorillas in check, tossing the program's eighth all-time no-hitter. He issued three walks and hit one batter while recording eight strikeouts. His performance spoiled a solid outing by Pitt State's Cooper Gardner (0-1), who allowed just two hits and one earned run in the complete-game loss.
