KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- The Pittsburg State women's basketball team (26-6) lost 67-53 to Emporia State in the MIAA Tournament Semifinal on Saturday (March 7) at Municpal Auditorium.
Pitt State hit only 33 percent from the floor, while the Lady Hornets hit 50 percent, including 44 points in the paint.Â
Mikaela Burgess led the Gorillas with 16 points off the bench to lead all scorers. Lizzy Jeronimus and Antqunita Reed each scored nine.Â
Marissa Quick and Kelly Moten each scored 11 for Emporia State and Jacee Kramer added 10.Â
The first half was tight with two ties and seven lead changes. The Gorillas led by five early and did not allow Emporia State to score for the first four minutes of the game. Following a Burgess layup to put the Gorilla up by five, the Lady Hornets went on a 6-0 run to go up by one for the first time in the game. The team's traded baskets and the Gorillas grabbed the lead again until a layup by Quick with 3:28 to go gave Emporia State the lead for good. Pitt State trailed by only three, 25-22, at the half.Â
The Lady Hornets built up to a nine-point lead in the first three minutes of the second half and didn't look back. Pitt State came no closer than seven the rest of the game.Â
The Gorillas will now await word on its NCAA Tournament matchup. The selections will be announced on Sunday (March 8) at 9 p.m. on ncaa.com.
