Long Ball Proves Dangerous as Softball Loses Two to Griffons

PITTSBURG, Kan. -- Missouri Western hit four home runs over two games to win 1-0 and 7-5 over the Gorillas on Saturday (April 11) afternoon at the PSU Softball Complex.

The Griffons outhit the Gorillas 5-3 in game one, but one hit in the top of the first would be all they needed. Tiffany Gillaspy hit a solo home run for a 1-0 lead and that would be all the scoring there was in teh game for either team.

The Gorillas had more offensive power in game two. After Missouri Western used a walk and two Gorilla errors to score the first run of the game, but Pitt State had an answer in the bottom half of the inning. Ashton Pratt drew a lead off walk. With one out, Nicole Nease hit a two-run home run for a 2-1 Pitt State lead.

A home run, an error and two base hits brought home two more Griffon runs in the top of the second for a 3-2 lead.

Pitt State had an answer once again, this time in the form of a Catie Cummins solo home run, tying the game at 3-3.

The Gorillas went up 5-3 in the bottom of the third. Nease drew a lead off walk and Guthier followed with a home run to center.

A three run home run by Gillaspy in the top of the fourth gave Missouri Western a 6-5 lead. They added another on a solo home run in the sixth for the final 7-5 score.

Pitt State got only three more hits after the third inning, but could not plate a run.

Emmie Robertson took both losses on the day. She struck out eight and walked one in seven innings in game one. She pitched the final four innings in game two and struck out one batter. Lynsey Conner started game two. She gave up five runs on six hits, but only three of the runs were earned.

Pitt State will take on Central Missouri at 3 p.m. on Wednesday (April 15) at the PSU softball complex.
